Log surfing

So, I'm wandering through my httpd logs, and I notice that some folks have really funny machine names. What's most interesting, though, is that a lot of the military domains are goofily named. For instance:

squid1.tacom.army.mil
jaguar.andrews.af.mil
centurion.warren.af.mil
viper.usafa.af.mil
B-Kahuna.hickam.af.mil

Alas, the vast majority of military domains, as most com and edu ones as well, are dull and cryptic. wrtc53254-139.westriv.com, anyone?

my guess is that most admins, even military ones, just pick names they like.

or maybe each person has their own sub-domain?

When I was at an Air Farce base recently, I noticed that the admins had a very Rocky & Bullwinkle way of naming things, until the big guys found out.

They had Boris, Natasha, Rocky, etc. Until the bosses noticed the trend (took a few years) and then forced them to rename to shark names (the mascot for the squadron). So, they became Hammerhead and Lemon, etc.

Then, the BIG BIG boys got involved, and all externally accessible machines became cryptic nonsense like FJ34ER5 or whatever. Made it a real bear to set up our Exchange accounts, I'll tell you. We used to be able to connect to Boris, real easy to remember. Then, it was a machine that had to be written down to keep it straight. The geeks had it right in the first place.

Oddly, the mail server is still named with an English name, Falcon.

too bad they probably weren't as careful with their passwords as they were with their machine names.... yeah?

mind you, i don't like people naming machines after simpsons characters here - seems to invite disaster.
