Fixing the language, one person at a time
I've decided to not deign to answer those who purposely mangle their mother tongue online. No longer will I respond to anyone who asks me, "wat dew u lyke 2 yews 4 dat?" or any other inane crap. Typos are one thing, unfamiliarity with a language is another; purposely misspelling things just to be "kewl" is stupid, moronic, idiotic, and several other synonyms.
So, all you "leet" folks out there - piss off. I'm not going to answer your questions, except perhaps to tell you that you are not speaking any language I recognize. Phbt!

HEY!!!!!!!
Doncha jus luv me? LOL How's that?
Re: HEY!!!!!!!
Folks will use "lyke" instead of "like." I don't get that one at all. If you're going to use slang, at least make the slang word shorter than the real one!

English in email
Re: English in email
Of course, my question remains, if she argues that this is correct language use for an African American inner-city youth, what about all of those Anglo American youngsters following suit. Trendy? Vernacular? Or?
What says you?
I know where I stand....
Re: English in email
I think the arguments claiming Ebonics to be a valid linguistic choice specious at best. If Ebonics (or AAVE if we're to be PC) were truly a natural outgrowth of the African languages of their forefathers, why is it not in universal use across all African descendents? Listen to African British, for example. They sound British. They don't use the bizarre phrasing that is common among the Ebonics set.
As for the kids online who feel the need to SpElL EvErEe TiNg rOnG, well, they are just trying to be Kewl without having any idea how stupid (not stoopid) they appear. Seriously, it takes so much extra time to type things incorrectly, why not just use correct vocabulary and spelling in the first place?
Ah, well. I was actually taken to task for telling someone that I didn't speak their broken language last week. Surprisingly, the person I rebuked came back with a perfectly understandable re-statement of the original query. They know how to speak correctly, so why do it wrong on purpose? Beats me.

So the deliberate misuse of language is the best they can do.
