Blue Laws suck

Wanting to get my grocery shopping for the week done early, I hit Safeway at 9am on Sunday. Picked up a bottle of 1999 Beringer Gamay Beaujolais, to go with the French Country Bake I'm making for my little dinner gathering this week.

"Sorry, I can't sell you this until 10 o'clock on Sunday."

Is there a state in the Union that has no restrictions on alcohol sales on the weekend? I feel like I'm in the 18th century at times.

Oh, well, I still forgot the lemon for the hefeweisen and I was planning to pick up the crusty bread Tuesday afternoon anyhow.

California will sell you any kind of alcohol, any time, except between 2 am and 6 am. Any other time of day or night, if you want it, it's yours.

And the saddest part of that is, when I used to work graveyard at AMPM, some of those old guys would stand there in the morning until 6 am, when we were allowed to unlock the beer cases. Really damned sad.

I didn't think I had ever encountered blue laws in California.

Of course, what's really funny is I was buying Gamay Beaujolais, not some bottle of Mad Dog in a paper sack. And, it was 9:30 when I wanted to buy it! If I went to church, I'd have gotten some wine there, but not at Safeway, no sir!

You should try visiting Utah. You can't get any hard liquor any where, and beer and wine sales are strictly controlled. Their "no sell" times are even longer than Cali's!

Doesn't Utah have "onsale" rules that are bizarre, like they require a club membership to drink anywhere except at home?
