Apparently the Scifi Channel was having "post-apocalyptic movie" weekend or something. I never saw an announcement, but the fare was pretty clear. Steel Dawn, Mad Max (1 & 3 but not 2), etc. The capper though, was WaterWorld. Never saw it in the theater, since it was only out for a couple days or so. Never felt like picking up the most recent movie to be labeled "Heaven's Gate" so I missed it until now. It's actually not as bad as you would expect, but it's no classic. Think Mad Max with worse dialog, better set design, and Dennis Hopper looking really uncomfortable.

I always thought Waterworld had the potential to be a pretty decent movie. After all, it's not, for a change, Kevin Costner being the dashing, charming, good-looking hero. In fact, he's a crusty, grubby, bastard. And the story definately had potential. I always felt like maybe they rushed the script, or maybe the wrong guys wrote it.
If you secretly like post-apocalyptic Kevin Costner movies, I highly recommend "The Postman". The concept that something as simple as mail service would bring a torn-apart world back together is pretty compelling, and this script was WAY better than Waterworld's. :)

I wanted to avoid "The Postman" until I'd read the book, but I may end up renting it sometime anyhow, just on your recommendation.

In Waterworld, I loved how pained Hopper seemed to be. It was like he was playing a deliberate caricature of himself in roles like the one in Apocalypse Now or something. He just looked like he was waiting for them to yell Cut and give him his money.
