I installed Movable Type this weekend, just to play with (Greymatter refused to install and run), then I went ahead and installed PostNuke as well.

They're both pretty slick, and they make a consistent site and all that. But, I think the combination of Dreamweaver for site development and Livejournal embedded into my main index page is doing pretty well for me.

For those who maintain both an LJ and a self-hosted weblog, why? Please explain to me why you have both, especially those who seem to post the exact same things in each. Why not just use LJ embedded in your site? It's one line of HTML.

Seriously, I'm curious as to the reasons folks have for maintaining two different weblogging tools. Entertain me.

I have two primarily because I have two completely different circles of friends...sometimes there's thoughts that I don't want one set to read, things that I don't mind if the other set knows. It's complex to explain, exactly, but sometimes I have things in my head that I'd like Gary and Cynthia's input on, but I really don't want Litmus Green's input on. Or even want them to know I'm thinking them. Or maybe it's something I need to get out of my head, and I don't want ANY comment on, and I know you and Cyn won't, but the ElGee circle would stress and bug me about. Plus, sometimes there's things that I know one side might care about, but the other just simply won't. I rarely post the same posting in both journals, unless there's a really good reason. :)

Plus, it just simply worked out that way. Gary, you got me into LJ first, but no one in my "other circle" at the time did any sort of blogging. So Ed gets bored one day, and creates blogs for all of our friends in that group. And it ended up being a lot of fun, because we're all such a close group, and we goof around a lot with our blogs. And Ed can allow as many people blogs as he wants. (Or disallow, if he's grumpy)

My only thing with LJ lately is that they don't allow "open registration"...you now have to be invited by a registered user to get in. This keeps a lot of my friends out, because I'm all out of invitations. With Ed's blogs, we can add as many people as ask Ed for a blog. :)
