Presumptious

There are many impatient people in the world, it seems. I just got an IM out of the blue from a complete stranger. I responded with a single word greeting, then went back to work (I am at work after all).

A few seconds later I notice a message on my screen telling me I'm rude for ignoring people. Well, excuse me for not responding in three seconds to a complete stranger who is not even saying anything beyond "Hello" and shit. That makes as much sense as telemarketers getting mad because I don't pick up the phone. Just because I have Trillian running doesn't mean I'm required to answer people in under 5 seconds. Get a life.

OH YES!! I remember that all to well. I used to use ICQ quite alot and I'd get the same thing!

I, like most grownups, use my IM clients to keep up with people I know. I also use them as a contact point for my Userpic volunteer work. But, when a stranger IMs me and has nothing to SAY, I don't feel any need to respond. Either ask a question, make a leading statement, something. Oh, well. The BLOCK button works equally well in Trillian as on the various component IM clients. :-)

Yah, and how rude are those idiots that keep sending me ads telling me they're naked in their livingroom? I send them replies, and do they EVER respond? Nope.

The difference being, when you IM me, you actually have a sentence or two you plan on exchanging. When a total stranger chats me up with "hey" and I respond with "straw" that is the point where most people either start talking or go away. :-)

That's one reason why I don't use instant messaging programs any more. I don't have time to chat to random people. I don't even have time to chat to my own friends!

At least you have a life though ;)

I don't have time for rude presumptious people. Just because you were capable of sending me a message doesn't mean I want to talk to you. Congratulations, you know where the send key is. I also know where the Killfile is located. heh

Actually, it was Pat's computer. He's got a ringing sound set for every time he does anything, and other bells and dings for opening and closing programs. I don't know how he stands the cacophany.
