For those that don't have lj_maintenance as a friend, free users cannot post.

If not for the ease of aggregating many weblogs on one "friends" page, I'd jump to a straight Movable Type weblog. Good thing I'm not a free user, I guess.

Strangely, free users can reply to paid users' journals, but can't reply to other free users nor can they start new posts of their own. Kind of odd. I really wish there was some way to avoid the central-server problem and still maintain a community. I don't think you can do P2P LJ, though.

See, things like this are why I like my Movable Type blog...it's always completely free, it's a really small community, I know the administrator personally if there's a problem, and I don't have any of the down time I do with LiveJournal. This works for me. :)

I still have the issue of community. I have not seen any simple (no programmer required) way to aggregate a bunch of weblogs/journals on one page like the LJ Friends system. In LJ, I can read your blog as well as the journals of others, but I don't know how I could do it in reverse.
