We went to the indoor air show today. That’s a trip. I guess it’s pretty cool to have a large auditorium to use for radio-controlled airplanes, since the weather doesn’t always cooperate. It was very cool, especially seeing how homemade-looking some of the planes were. Lots of styrofoam and cardboard were in evidence, with a rare airplane that looked retail. There were even a couple of planes that looked like jets, but obviously weren’t. Their propellers were just well-disguised in the wings or in front of the tail. They bill it as the first annual, and if they make good on that, I’m sure we’ll hang out there again next year. What the heck, it’s free!

They actually do make some RC planes with ducted fans that can be mounted inside, like a real jet engine. They're a lot more expensive though, and I don't know if they'd work inside an arena. I used to work at a hobby shop that sold RC planes.

I think the ducted fan ones go a lot faster than you'd want to control in a 100x200 foot airspace. Most of the planes were really delicate-looking. I'm not sure how many of them could have even flown outdoors, to be honest. One breeze, and it's all over, buddy!

Oh, totally. The indoor ones are basically balsa sticks with wings made of paper and tiny motors like the ones in CD drives, with teensy little servos. Can't fly them outside if there's any breeze.
