This is what I imagine being an English or Philosophy major is like.

After taking my philosophy of science class last quarter, I fear I must agree. When people sit around taking seriously the notion that we can believe in planets when we see them through telescopes, but not bacteria (even though the theory of light we are using is completely identical), you know you have entered la-la land.

To be fair, a lot of the jargon of math and science also looks like bullshit to people unacquainted with it.

Maybe so, but I understand enough of the math/science jargon to feel superior to the liberal arts jargon-slingers. No, it is not consistent, but I am only human. :-)
