Case against violence
I got this in email at work today. Figure
rillifane and
ikilled007 would enjoy it, at the least.
With all of this talk of war, many of us will encounter "Peace Activists" who will try to convince us that we must refrain from retaliating against the ones who terrorized us all on September 11, 2001. These activists may be alone or in a gathering. Most of us do not know how to react to them. When you come upon one of these people, or one of their rallies, here are the proper rules of etiquette:
1. Listen politely while this person explains their views. Strike up a conversation if necessary and look very interested in their ideas. They will tell you how revenge is immoral, and that by attacking the people who did this to us, we will only bring on more violence. They will probably use many arguments, ranging from political to religious to humanitarian.
2. In the middle of their remarks, without any warning, punch them in the nose.
3. When the person gets up off the ground, they will be very angry and they may try to hit you so be careful.
4. Very quickly and calmly remind the person that violence only brings about more violence and remind them of their stand on this matter. Tell them if they are committed to a nonviolent approach to undeserved attacks, they will turn the other cheek and negotiate a solution. Tell them they must lead by example if they really believe what they are saying.
5. Most of them will think for a moment and then agree that you are correct.
6. As soon as they do that, hit them again. Only this time hit them much harder. Square in the nose.
7. Repeat steps 2 - 5 until the desired results are obtained and the idiot realizes how stupid an argument he/she is making. There is no difference in an individual attacking an unsuspecting victim or a group of terrorists attacking a nation of people. It is unacceptable and must be dealt with, perhaps at a high cost. We owe our military a huge debt for what they are doing for our children and us. We must support them and our leaders at times like these. We have no choice. We either strike back, VERY HARD, or we will keep being hit in the nose.
Case closed.

The anti-warriors must know that their position is a luxury made affordable only by the sure bet that no one in authority will ever accede to their position. The marchers and shouters and flag-burners in Washington pretended to the argument that war should not be waged. What they really mean is that war should not be waged by them. It should be waged by other mothers' sons and daughters. How many pacifists would be willing to accept the logical outcome of their creed of nonviolence even in face of attack--life as a conquered people? Not many, I would think. How many want the (mostly lower-class) men and women of the United States armed forces to continue to fight so that they may enjoy the luxury of preaching against fighting? Nearly all, I would think.

The simple logic of experience and common sense all too often eludes the kind of people who preach non-violence All the philosophizing and discussing the relative merits of various cultures and value systems doesn't change the one inescapable fact regarding recent events. The U.S. was attacked, and nobody can possibly say that any provocation was worth the lives of those people who died in DC and NYC.
The simple logic of experience and common sense all too often eludes the kind of people who preach non-violence über alles. As a veteran, I can conclusively state that the vast majority of the military members I've encountered would rather the U.S. never go to war. But, when we go, we need to win. And, when we go, we need justification to attack another nation's sovereign soil. If this wasn't justification, I don't know what would be.
It's nice to sit back in the U.S. and luxuriate in how the big bad States have not always been good guys in world politics. Yep, we helped install Pinochet and Noriega and Marcos. Yes, we gave up an opportunity to have a democratic Vietnam by doublecrossing Ho Chi Minh. Yes, we have sold weapons to Iran in order to finance a congressionally forbidden war in Nicaragua. All that having been said, what country would you rather live in? Got an answer? Then go there.
If you don't have the strength of your convictions, why should anyone listen to you?

There are always policy reasons which argue for or against a particular war but the notion that "wars never solve anything" is downright silly.

Re:
I enjoy arguing with informed (or at least reasonable) people with whom I disagree. Silly children are just boring.
