How in the world can you look at the events of the past two months (euphemistically referred to as the "9/11 events") and consider it an "opportunity for change" that we shouldn't "waste" by bombing bad guys? Right, we should stop considering the events as a case of "us vs. them" and go ahead and sing Kumbaya. After all, there's no way that Bin Laden and friends will bomb us again if we tell them we are all happy and global-minded now. Yep, that's fuckin' logical.

Seriously, I actually read someone's journal that called the recent attacks "an opportunity for change" that we shouldn't be wasting by blowing up caves in Afghanistan. While I certainly wonder if the method for our "war" is effective, just telling them we've seen the errors of our ways sure won't work.

I continually see commentary from (mostly young) LJ users, which tends to run the same way.

The U.S. is a big bad country, and we need to start thinking about being just one member of the global community, rather than pushing our views on others. Violence only begets more violence, and we should stop bombing Afghanistan and try to seek other solutions. I, of course, am too slackjawed to come up with any other solution, but I'm sure one must exist because otherwise my touchy-feely warm fuzzy approach to world politics will be exposed as a feebleminded sham. Let's all love each other and stop being so pushy as a country. We really deserved to get 6000 people killed, because we condone what Israel is doing on their sovereign soil.

Or something like that, although rarely as succinctly or clearly stated.

I know 12 years in uniform gives me a different perspective than some, but turning the other cheek isn't going to work with these guys. Clinton turned the other cheek several times, and we ended up with a hole in the side of a ship and two collapsed buildings. That worked.

I've also never met a person I considered to exhibit intelligence that felt American public schooling was anything less than pitiful and insulting. Oh, and maybe even humiliating. :-)
