The United States expects to spend more than $1 billion a month on the early phases of the war in Afghanistan, and the cost is likely to rise rapidly above that level as the Pentagon builds its forces in the region, Congressional and administration officials say.

There's nothing like a war to stimulate a failing economy.

There are many economists who believe that the Great Depression didn't end until about 1989, with the decent economy we enjoyed between 1939 and 1990 completely dependent on a defense industry that several presidents warned us to not get dependent on. Was it Eisenhower who coined "Military-Industrial Complex"? Not to mention the warnings against "foreign entanglements" that Washington himself mentioned.

And, this coming from a proud veteran, right?
