That's just bizarre. I don't know how they stand it, either; I let my account run out and it was barely a week before I was so annoyed by the timeouts that I sent them more money.
meaning more than 6% pay? that's pretty amazing for a free service. especially considering that the free accounts include people who came, saw, and got bored / forgot about it / etc.
Actually, only 3.5% pay, which equals 15,306 users. Let's see, at $25/year, that's $380,000 and change. Considering the hardware and bandwidth costs, I'm thinking LJ might be almost able to pay for itself. The remaining folks that aren't "free users" are early adopters and permanent accounts (345 permanent). I've noticed a lot of the early adopters have paid accounts instead now, since their "old geezer" status doesn't get them quite as much as paying does, although more than those freeloaders get.
Seriously, it is only $25/year, and if you use it regularly, why not help support it? Besides, you can make up your own styles and have 10 icons if you pay a little. Obviously, this is not directed at you, sosiouxme, since you're a paid user as well. Just the "generic you" there...

standard freeloader problem, shows up everywhere... what's great about this place is that even with such a small number actually supporting it, it can stay up. which i suppose gives the freeloaders even less incentive...
the only paid user feature i use (besides the invisible speed benefits, i suppose) is poll-making, and that rarely... but what's 25 bucks to me for a service that wastes so much of my time? =)
I use the embedding feature, to make my website look as if it gets updated a lot. And, the styles on my journal, which are really just fun, along with the numerous icons. The embedding thing is what made me plunk down my money, though.
Yeah, that is kind of frightening, but based on the language skills often displayed here, I'd have assumed that the largest percentage were 7 years old and spoke English (poorly) as a second language.
Did you hear that WalkingMan killed off the Billiam character? I guess he'd gotten tired of it, after around a year of playing with people's heads. I'm amazed at how many women sent in pics of their breasts to him.
