Since I just paid for another year of LJ, I've got like 2 dozen invite codes, yet my family and friends (with the notable exception of c_feightner) can't figure out how to join. Well, D just hasn't gotten around to it; I have no doubt he could follow the oh-so-complex sequence of "enter username and password desired" to get an account.

Starting a few months ago, in order to keep the growth of Livejournal in check (and stop the proliferation of fake accounts used to harass others), LJ implimented "Invite" codes. If you go to this link, you'll be able to generate one code for a free account, and more for paid accounts. I get a code per month paid, so I've got over 20 codes available. I gave one to Chip, and sent three others to my siblings, and one to a co-worker. The only one who used the code was c_feightner, and I was right there at his desk when he did so. It's not a difficult procedure, although some get easily confused. :-)

Anyway, the only way to start a new LJ account now is with an Invite code or a paid account. SO, if you know anyone who wants to play on LJ and doesn't have an invite code, let me know, I've got dozens.

Yeah, it's pretty tough to click on the link I sent, enter a username, password and nickname. Hooboy, I can see why you'd want to wait until you had lots of free time to make sure you get that right...
